New York Winter Driving Tips

Think you’re a good driver? Even in the icy snow of a New York winter? Test your winter driving knowledge with these driver safety tips:

You don’t have to heat up the car. Modern cars start pretty quickly. As long as your windows are clear, the mechanics should be good to go in about 30 seconds.

Don’t put heavy items in the backseat. Typically, people put a lot of weight in the back. But when you’re moving, the weight becomes an added burden that you have to stop and much more pulling you in all direction.

It takes 4-10 times longer to stop when driving in ice and snow than in ideal driving conditions. As a driver, you should be constantly looking ahead, and keep a safe following distance from the car in front of you.

Temperature drop affects tire pressure. Tires with low pressure are dangerous and don’t offer as much performance or safety. Cold weather can affect tire pressure- a ten degree drop in temperature eliminates one pound of pressure. It is also essential to make sure you have a sturdy set of snow tires that aren’t worn so you have the best traction on the road.

Accelerate going up a hill. While this may seem counter-intuitive when you’re going up a hill, it is best to accelerate. Increase your speed and accelerate at the bottom of the hill to gain momentum, carry it into the hill, and try to maintain your speed.

Slow down, going downhill. When you’re going downhill, you should identify that you are going down a hill, and slow down at the top. You don’t want to slow down at the middle or the bottom. In an emergency, put the break pedal down and hold it until it gains traction.

What should you do in a rear wheel skid. If you change direction or increase speed quickly in the snow, your car could careen out of control. If you start skidding, turn into the skid and decrease the speed. As the car slows, turn the wheel back to the direction you want to car to go and begin to accelerate.
