Safe Winter Driving Tips

Safe Winter Driving TipsAs many motorists are aware, driving during this time of year can be harrowing. With ice-slicked roads and heavy snowfall to consider, there are plenty of additional risks that drivers face during the harsh winter season. To avoid the dangers associated with winter weather, ensure you protect yourself with a comprehensive and customized New York Auto Insurance policy and heed the following safe driving tips.

Basic safety tips.

Never drive when you are fatigued. Risky road conditions are dangerous as it is, and drivers need to be alert and able to respond immediately to a change in traction or traffic. Next, be sure to properly inflate your tires before heading out, as under-inflated tires are a hazard! Drive slowly and allow plenty of time to arrive at your destination and give yourself plenty of room to brake, especially in icy or snowy conditions. Remember, the average time it takes to stop is 3-4 seconds, which can be increased to as many as 10 seconds in snow!

Remember to accelerate and decelerate slowly. It takes more time to do both on slippery roads, so take your time. Next, use inertia to your advantage. Don’t stop if you can avoid it. There’s a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it, explains AAA. With this in mind, don’t speed up hills in the snow as it will only cause your tires to spin out. Instead, get some inertia and traction going by building up speed prior to ascending the hill.

If you don’t have to go out, don’t. Rather than brave the roads and risk an accident, consider foregoing driving all together.
