Home Insurance: Protect Your Home While Your Away for the Holidays

Home Insurance Protect Your Home While Your Away for the Holidays Whether you’re flying across the country or driving down the street, the holidays is one of the busiest travel times of the year. You’re focused on herding the kids, gifts, and family dog in the car, making sure no one and nothing is left behind. But what about your home?  Thieves are opportunists- they will break into homes left vulnerable and unattended. Take a moment to beef up your home’s security while you away. Just a few simple tricks can help put your mind at ease. Put interior and exterior lights on timers/motion sensors. Set the timers on staggered hours to turn lights on and off at different times. Install tapered deadbolt locks on entry doors. The taper makes it extremely difficult to use a wrench or other tool to twist the lock open. Get someone to maintain your property by removing snow or mowing the lawn. Suspend the mail service and newspaper delivery, or ask a neighbor or trusted friend to pick it up for you. Newspapers lying in the driveway is a surefire indicator that no one is home. Install a monitored security system. Inform the local police department that your house will be empty. Ask a neighbor or friend to watch your house for you and check on it every so often. If possible, getting someone to house sit would also be a great option. The experts at A.J. (888) 639-4560 Earlier this year, the Huff Post addressed Westchester County’s (New York metro) vulnerability to severe flood disasters. New Jersey based non-profit news and research organization, Climate Central, states that there are several factors that contribute to Westchester County’s susceptibility to flood. As sea levels are rising and New York’s susceptibility to flood have increased dramatically, global warming has tripled the chance of New York state’s exposure to an extreme flood disaster. Fortunately, this knowledge has spread all over the globe and has motivated individuals and groups to create flood control plans. Here are several tips on how to prepare for floods in Mamaroneck Flood Insurance Tip #1 – Be knowledgeable and do some research. There are several websites that estimate your region’s susceptibility to floods. Websites like, Surging Seas, calculate your zip code’s flood risk through its sea level rise, storm surge, and tide. Flood Insurance Tip #2 – Prepare an emergency plan. Most communities have already devised fixed emergency plans, warnings signals, and evacuation routes—take advantage and learn it. Take this a step further and practice a flood evacuation route with your family. Flood Insurance Tip #3 – Create an emergency supply bag.  The essential things to store in this bag are non-perishable food, can opener, first aid kit, prescription medicines, blankets, large containers of water, extra clothes, and sturdy shoes. Flood Insurance Tip #2 – Identify potential hazards in and around your home. Learn how to secure and protect them in the event that a flood does occur. You may even want to have an electrician raise any circuit breakers, switches, and socket. As your insurance agent, we will consult federal flood maps to find your flood zone, which will affect the cost of your insurance, the type of coverage you need, and the limits of coverage for areas of your home that lie below the lowest elevated floor, such as basements and crawlspaces. New York Employee Benefits: NYC’s Trans-Fat Ban Sees Results

New York Employee Benefits: NYC’s Trans-Fat Ban Sees Results New York has reached national news multiple times for its fight against obesity. Most recently, Mayor Bloomberg banned the sale of large sodas, in an effort to decrease our ever increasing consumption of sugary drinks. This post is brought to you by A.J. Benet New York Employee Benefits program But how about the trans fat ban? Five years later, does it actually work? The answer is yes, according to CNN and Med Page Today. In 2006, New York City approved the first ban on trans fats in restaurant chains, and the ban was enacted in 2009. Since then, trans fat content fell on average by 2.4 g., about a 22-calorie drop in trans fat per purchase. On a total scale of the typical 1,500 daily caloric intake, a 22 calorie decline seems insignificant. However, it is distinctive; estimates have linked 40 daily calories from trans fat with a 23% increased risk of heart disease. To assess the effects of the trans fat ban, researchers looked at lunch receipts compared to nutritional information and conducted lunchtime surveys with customers at 168 Manhattan, New York fast food chains before and after the legislation was implemented. The decline in trans fat was greatest at hamburger chains, followed by Mexican food places and fried chicken chains. The number of lunches that contained zero trans fat almost doubled, rising from 32% to 59% after the legislation. Overall, the trans fat ban seems to have had a significant effect across the city. The public policy initiative is one component of a broader fight against obesity and heart disease. New York Auto Insurance: Cameras at Stoplights Could Increase Tickets

New York Auto Insurance: Cameras at Stoplights Could Increase Tickets New York City drivers don’t typically have to haggle with police officers or try to beguile their way out of tickets. Catching up to a driver speeding through a congested intersection is nearly impossible to feasibly and safely do. A proposal gaining momentum in Albany however, could change just that. This post is brought to you by AJ Benet New York Auto Insurance programs. According to the New York Times, the proposal would install cameras that record the speed of passing cars and issue violations automatically. The speed and accuracy of the technologies would be much more suitable for the fast paced hectic traffic of NYC streets, where it is often difficult and potentially dangerous to catch violators. The proposal calls for 40 cameras mounted throughout the city. About half of those cameras can be rotated different directions, so drivers aren’t ever certain when their speed is being tracked. Only violators who exceed the speed limit (usually 30 miles per hour), by more than 10 miles per hour would be given tickets, receiving a $50 fine. For those who exceed it by more than 30 miles per hour, the fine doubles to $100. Drivers would not be docked points on their licenses for violations. Proponents of the bill point to statistics. Since cameras were installed in Washington in 2001, police said traffic fatalities had fallen 56 percent. Hundreds of New Yorkers each year are killed in speeding-related crashes. Others argue the cameras aren’t fair because they can’t capture the context of the situation the way a cop would, for example if someone was simply trying to clear the intersection.
