Avoid These Three Common Car Crash Causes

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are three common causes of car crashes in the United States.  What is important to note is that each of these factors are completely under the driver’s control. While you can’t eliminate every risk when you’re on the road, insuring your vehicle with a New York & New Jersey Auto Insurance Policy and being mindful of these common causes will safeguard you from liability. Pay Attention According to the NHTSA, about 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or other handheld electronic devices while driving. Add to this fact the countless other distractions you may face while driving, such as playing your car stereo or talking to a passenger. While you can’t control other drivers on the road, it is important to remember that you can control yourself.  Pay attention to what you are doing so that you’ll be ready to react quickly in the event of a threat. Stay Sober Don’t drive after you’ve been drinking or using other drugs, including prescription drugs. In 2012, according to the National Safety Council (NSC), 15,000 people were killed in accidents involving impaired drivers. If you are unsure how a new medication will affect you, don’t drive until you know. Don’t Speed A driver could be tempted to think that the majority of crashes happen on the interstate. However, according to the NHTSA, this is not the case. The highest number of speed-related accidents occurs on roads with a speed limit lower than 55mph. Always drive at a safe speed, while keeping in mind the drivers around you. If someone behind you is trying to speed up, do not try blocking them. Move and let them go passed you, otherwise you could increase your risk of a crash. At A.J. Benet Inc., we know how important it is to keep you safe. You and your vehicles deserve quality coverage from a responsive, community-based agency that always goes beyond just the policy. Westchester County Personal Insurance: Is Insurance on your College Checklist?

Westchester County Personal Insurance: Is Insurance on your College Checklist? The first day of college is similar to the first day of kindergarten, in that it’s a momentous event that may or may not involve tears. Preparing for college is as important to parents as it is to their children. For many, a “college checklist” is an adjunct for preparation; a cork board to adorn with old pictures, a hamper small enough to take home during breaks and if you’re lucky, a flat screen.  But what about reviewing your insurance policies? In the midst of purchasing bedding and choosing the best dormitory, reviewing insurance policies is often overlooked. However, it’s essential to add insurance onto your “college checklist.” So, before you start sending your kids off to college, ask yourself the following question: And does my child intend to bring any valuable items? Is my child going to live on-campus or off-campus? Is my child bringing his/her car to college? And take the following steps: Whether your child is moving on or off campus, it’s essential to create an inventory of all personal belongings. Create an excel sheet, note the items, calculate its estimated value and take a picture. Be sure to note high-value items (e.g. laptop, television, camera, jewelry). Speak with your Westchester County insurance agent to determine the extent of coverage provided by your homeowners’ policy. If coverage is available, ask if it’s only applicable to students residing on-campus (as it often does). If your child is going to live off-campus, be sure to purchase renters insurance. It’s inexpensive and worthwhile. The cost of Westchester County auto insurance varies depending on whether your child is taking their car to school or not.  Insurance agencies often re-evaluate the cost and factor in numerous variables, such as college’s location. At A.J. Benet, Inc., we take pride in the relationships we have established with our individual clients – addressing their changing insurance needs as milestones in their lives occur. From an individual’s first car purchase to the family’s minivan and a teenager’s new set of wheels, to a rented townhouse in Westchester County, a dream house overlooking the harbor in Larchmont, or a new condo in Manhattan as an empty nester, A.J. Benet is there to protect you, your family, and assets wherever life takes you. We invite you to review…

Westchester County Private Client Services: High Net Worth Insurance

Westchester County Private Client Services: High Net Worth Insurance Most individuals who own a business, home or car carries an accompanying insurance policy. Hours of rifling through Google’s endless page results, contacting prospective insurers; it’s a long, arduous process that typically ends in purchasing an “x” amount of coverage for a “y” amount in premiums that are feasible for you, your assets and your finances. So, this takes us to a couple questions; why are high net worth (HNW) individuals purchasing insurance policies conducive for average salary individuals with an average amount of assets? And why aren’t these policies being written by insurance companies that specialize in high net worth insurance? According to Accenture, North America’s HNW population has risen 8.6 percent in 2010, after rising 16.6 percent in 2009. With a continual increase of wealthy individuals, it’s presumed that HNW niche insurance companies are being flooded with elite clientele vying for their services. But according to Property Casualty 360, this is not the case. Moreover, over 80 percent of HNW individuals do not carry coverage written by these niche companies. This means that over 80 percent carry an inadequate amount of coverage. Investing in protecting your valuable assets is just as important as deciphering which fine art collection or antique car is worthwhile. Right now is a fitting time to educate the HNW population that niche companies have (1) unique solutions for their particular needs and (2) private client services in mitigating their specialized risks. You have a luxurious lifestyle that includes spending summers in your Hamptons vacation home and the rest of the year traveling between your Manhattan and Westchester home. A major hurricane destroys much of the state, including your Manhattan and Hampton home. The replacement cost of both of homes is an estimated $4 million, but you only have $1.5 million coverage– what would you do? It may be obvious to many that it’s necessary for affluent individuals and families to purchase additional insurance coverage. However, this is not the reality. High net worth individuals are underestimating their risks and the cost of a liability claim. As an affluent individual, it’s essential to purchase additional insurance coverage that standard policies can’t provide. This often comes in the form of the following policies (includes but not limited to) excess liability, high-value umbrella, employee practices liability insurance (EPLI), errors & omissions, workers comp, high value homeowners, yacht/watercraft, classic/antique/collector auto, trustee liability, and more. Why? Higher income individuals and families are different from standard income individuals. Aside from the fact that they earn a significant amount of money greater than the average person, they are exposed to risks that are uncommon to most. But to affluent individuals, these risks can cause irreparable damage to his/her finances and reputation. Common risks include: Heavy reliance on staff and advisors Communication (libel and slander Directors  & Officers More assets to protect (jewelry, collector cars, yachts, art collections, etc) Moreover, wealthy individuals and families attract lawsuits from individuals with unwarranted intentions of claiming a surplus of money from a wealthy defendant. Co-chairman of a New York’s Cozen O’Connor law firm, John J. Westchester County Auto Insurance: The Future of Driving

Westchester County Auto Insurance: The Future of Driving One of Google’s latest technology ventures has been developing a self-driving car. Still a few years away from consumer production, the concept has nonetheless generated exciting discussion about the possibilities and possible impact of a driverless vehicle. Casey B. Mulligan, an economics professor at the University of Chicago, tackled this idea recently in a column for the New York Times. He argued an interesting, less thought about side to the “smart” car revolution: driverless cars would actually increase fuel consumption and the number of drivers on the road. One of the touted features of driverless cars is that driven by its data and computing power, driverless cars are also purported to reduce traffic congestion and nationwide fuel consumption by driving smarter. However, Mulligan disputes this. Smarter driving reduces the cost per mile of vehicle usage, which will lead to more driving. But research has shown that cutting travel costs through reduced gas prices actually causes people to drive more (they will choose their vehicle over carpooling and public transit, for example). Thus there could be more traffic and more aggregate fuel consumption. There are a number of hurdles driverless vehicles have to jump before they ever hit the open road. It will alter auto insurance policies significantly. But they will also open up transportation options to people previously unable to drive, such as the blind or elderly. What do you think about Mulligan’s predictions? Will it increase traffic congestion? How could driverless cars affect the insurance marketplace? We’d love to hear from you. You and your vehicles deserve quality coverage from a responsive, community-based agency that always goes beyond just the policy. New Rochelle Flood Insurance: Key Facts About Flood Insurance

New Rochelle Flood Insurance: Key Facts About Flood Insurance Since Hurricane Sandy, the Westchester County area has struggled to restore the damage done. In the aftermath of destruction, one tragic trend has emerged- too many property owners are either unprepared or underinsured against financial damages they could suffer in the event of a catastrophic flood. It’s a common mistake that most people assume their New Rochelle County homeowners insurance policy would cover them in case of a natural disaster, but that is not always the case. Certain areas along the eastern coast may be located in hurricane-prone areas, in which wind damage could be the main threat. Other New Rochelle homeowners may be situated in a flood-prone area, which in the case of a flood, would cause unimaginable damages. This was the case with Hurricane Sandy- this super storm ended up being a threat for flood damage as opposed for wind damage that is typically associated with hurricanes. Property Casualty 360 discovered that a minimum of 25% of properties damaged had no flood insurance coverage. Yet, there are plenty of reasons why New Rochelle Flood Insurance is a crucial guard against damages caused by floods, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Obtaining the right New Rochelle flood insurance policy is designed to help protect your Westchester home and property against losses due to heavy rains, flood surges, storm drain backups, etc.. In assessing the risks, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), placed more than 20,000 communities in the U.S. into a flood zone category. The Westchester County community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program. This government backed program is designed to assist property owners to purchase insurance protection against losses from flooding. We not only can provide insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), but also have critical access to alternative markets, which in many cases are better suited for the areas we serve where flooding is prevalent. As your insurance agent, we will consult federal flood maps to find your flood zone, which will affect the cost of your insurance, the type of coverage you need, and the limits of coverage for areas of your home that lie below the lowest elevated floor, such as basements and crawlspaces. What You Need to Know About Westchester County Yacht Insurance

What You Need to Know About Westchester County Yacht Insurance While it may still be a crisp 40 degrees here in Mamaroneck, nonetheless it’s spring! With the promise of warmer weather, it’s time to start thinking about your sunny vacation plans. Boat sales have risen ten percent this year, in the first significant boost since the recession, and yachts are a large part of that picture. But owning a yacht also exposes you to some unique exposures. Here are some tips to watch out for to make sure you have the proper coverage for your vessel. Consequential damage. This applies when a yacht is disabled due to engine failure and suffers resulting hull damage. Although it is covered in most policies as a result of a storm or other event, it may not be if it is a “consequence” of mechanical failure. Parts Depreciation. As your boat ages, the parts can lose value, and most insurers will cover only the depreciated value of the part, not the full cost of replacing it. Navigation zone restrictions. Where you are, or where you plan on boating could affect your policy. Many policies are written based on navigation zones. They may be as narrow as the Florida Keys. And it may mean that a boater insured for the Bay Area in California may not be covered for damage that occurs in Mexico’s Pacific coast. So, as a boater, it is wise to check out any geographic limitations ahead of time. Experience. Of course, as a boat owner, experience always matters. Where you travel, how many years you’ve been boating for, and your type of boat can all affect your Westchester County Yacht Insurance policy. Whether you are docked in the marina at Stamford, garaged at your house in Rye, or cruising the Long Island Sound, your boat needs its own special type of insurance. A.J. Benet, Inc. knows that not all boat owners and their requirements are the same. Our staff strives to learn your particular habits and help you find insurance that addresses your personal risks. Fine Jewelry Insurance: Make Sure You’re Covered

Fine Jewelry Insurance: Make Sure You’re Covered Your jewelry collection is extremely precious to you. Whether you’ve amassed a family collection of heirlooms or some personal, highly valued gifts, you want to make sure you are protected. But misunderstandings of what exactly is covered in a homeowner’s policy could leave you high and dry if your jewelry is lost or stolen. At the essence of an issue is often a communication divide. There is a common disparity between perceived value and the actual value. An owner might have sentimental value, or overinflate the value of their jewelry, and have an estimate that conflicts with an expert opinion. Or, they might assume it is covered under their homeowner’s insurance when it really is much more valuable than that. Most homeowner’s policies do cover jewelry items. However, when the actual loss of an entire jewelry collection does occur, it is extremely rare that the owner receives a settlement that comes close to the true value of the missing items. To avoid that position, homeowners must have a firm understanding of the exact value of their possessions and base their insurance coverage accordingly. If you have a high end jewelry collection, you want to take the time to make sure every item is covered and properly insured for its current value. The key is documenting in detail, comprehensive information on each piece you own. Many jewelry appraisals conducted at local stoops- and their certificate of authority relies on simple sales techniques that may not adequately assess the value of a piece. It is essential that the value may have changed over time. The price of gold has increased significantly in the past 20 years; if you have an antique piece of gold jewelry; it is most likely worth significantly more today. High-value items need better protection than a standard homeowner’s policy. A.J. Benet offers sound, well-priced coverage for these valuable items either with a floater added onto your Westchester homeowners insurance policy or a stand-along policy . Westchester County Home Insurance: Keeping Critters Out

Westchester County Home Insurance: Keeping Critters Out Housing developments in former woodlands often have to contend with the areas previous residents. Squirrels, insects, raccoons, deer, and rodents all coexist with homeowners, often to the owner’s discontent. Westchester County Homeowners are looking for new ways to evict their unwelcome guests. According to the Wall Street Journal, about 30 percent of Americans used pest-control services last year, up from 20 percent in 2004. For animals, the suburbs is a win-win. The landscaping in suburbs, buffet line of garbage cans, and supply of food in the pantry are all enticing prospects for animals looking for a bunk. But the damage from critters can be significant. Deer forage your foliage and landscaping, raccoons ravage the garbage, and rodents including squirrels, rats, and mice chew their way into the house, damage soffits and electrical wires in the process. The threat of rabies and excrement from wild animals also raises health concerns. A rodent or animal infestation issue isn’t typically a reflection of the house’s years or cleanliness. In fact, sometimes newer houses are often the problem, being built with gaps allowing rodents to get in even when there isn’t a crumb in sight. Dangerous chemicals pose risks to homeowners, especially if they have pets or children. But there are other steps homeowners can take to rid themselves of unwanted house guests (at least the furry kind). Reinforcing houses, examining every nook and cranny to ensure there aren’t any construction gaps is one of the best ways to insure your house is fortified. Homeowners should check their dark garages and basements on a sunny day, looking for any hidden animals. Worn weather stripping around doors and spots where the cables runs through the wall are common entries for animals. And of course, if the problem persists and interferes with your daily life, it is best to hire an exterminator.
