Money Saving Tips for Homeowners

Money Saving Tips for HomeownersAs a homeowner, you know how quickly expenses add up. From utility bills to landscaping and groceries, there’s always something that needs to be paid for. Therefore, we have devised this list for you to be more aware of where your money goes and to pad your wallet over time. In addition to securing the right NY Home Insurance policy, heed the following advice.

Automate your thermostat.

There’s no reason to leave your air or heat on when you’re at work all day. Invest in a programmable thermostat so you don’t have to think about it. They can be expensive at $249, but many energy companies offer rebates for purchasing them and some even send them for free upon purchasing certain programs. Or, if you don’t want to spend the money, leave a note for yourself each morning before you go to work to turn it off.

Block out the sun.

Rather than keeping your blinds open all day, prevent your home from heating up by blocking the sun out. Turn down your shades and leave them closed during the hot summer months. This will lessen the workload for your AC, which can save you money in the long run. Be sure to use fans, as well, so that you can better circulate cooler air throughout your home quicker.

Replace your air filters.

Replace your HVAC filters at least every six months, preferably every three. Clogged, dirty filters block airflow and reduce your system’s efficiency. In the worst-case scenario, a wrongly-sized filter or dirty filter can cause your system to burn out and require a replacement, explains financial counselor Scott Alan Turner.

Fix leaking windows.

Letting air out and in can lead to excessive heating and cooling bills. Invest the time and money into repairing these faulty windows to improve your home’s efficiency and safety.
