June gloom has finally worn off- as the glorious New York summer emerges, you’re itching to get your vessel out on the water. Before you dive head first into boating, take a moment to refresh your boating safety tips, courtesy of the United States Coast Guard and Connecticut Boating Insurance

Above all, wearing a life jacket is still the most important step boaters can take to ensure their safety on the water. Boating fatalities jumped 12.8% in 2011 and are now at the highest level since 1998, according to the U.S. Coast Guard’s report 2011 Recreational Boating Statistics. Last year, 533 of the 758 boating fatalities resulted from drowning. Of those, 84% were not wearing a life jacket.

Develop a Float Plan. A float plan is essential whether you are manning a luxury yacht, 90 foot sport-fishing vessel, or just cruising in a flat-bottom skiff. Typically, the Skipper of the vessel is the individual who prepares the Float Plan, but any member can complete it. A Float Plan is a written statement that logs the details of an intended voyage, with the vessel, equipment, crew, and itinerary; it is left with a person who is remaining onshore. There are also many boating safety courses offered throughout the country for all types of recreational boaters. The U.S. coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadron, and many state boating agencies offer classis covering many aspects of boating safety from boat handling to reading the weather, and operational and safety instruction.

Of course, you always hope that you won’t ever be involved in a boating accident. However, in the chance that you are, you want to make sure to get the best coverage possible for you and your family.
